Don and I had wanted to go over the South Cross-Island Highway for some time.  People said it was the wildest and most spectacular of the major cross-island roads.

Together with another friend, we decided to go during the Chinese New Year holiday (early February 2005).  We wouldn't have the whole week, though, as we each had stuff to do for the first few days.  We were free from the Wednesday but that wouldn't leave us enough time to go to Taidong and come back by motorbike.  We decided to ride to Taidong but take the train back, sending our bikes back separately.

Booking transport and hotels was difficult.  Chinese New Year is the busiest time and despite phoning at the very beginning of the booking periods, we had to compromise on transport methods and accomodation.  We would have to take the train to Kaohsiung (Gaoxiong) only, then get a bus back to Taichung from there.  And the nice government-run budget hotel we'd had our eyes on was all booked up as well.  My friend phoned 10 hotels in Taidong City -- the tenth had room.
